About The Canyons Golf Club in Park City, Utah
The Canyons is a public resort course at Park City Mountain Resort, designed by Gene Bates with co-architect Casey Bates. What makes it unusual is the routing — several holes are built directly into the ski runs, so you're playing terrain that's under snow half the year.
The course feels massive in scale but the holes themselves sit on a minimal footprint — just 97 acres, a small number for a course this dramatic and a smart, modern way to build. The Bates team used crushed rock from the site as fill and as cart-path material doubling as bunker edging, which saves space and cost and catches the occasional errant shot before it leaves the property. A state-of-the-art "fertigation" system injects fertilizer straight into the irrigation lines rather than broadcasting it, putting water and nutrients exactly where they're needed.
What Stands Out
It's a genuinely fun, memorable course with a layout you won't see anywhere else — playing actual ski terrain in summer is the kind of novelty that holds up because the golf underneath it is good. The par 3s are the signature, and there are a lot of them.
